Kananaskis is the best-kept secret for north-of-the-border luxe wilderness adventures

Alberta's Kananaskis region is emerging as a premier destination for travelers seeking mountain luxury without the fanfare and busyness of Banff or Vail. This region offers spa days in pine forests, Olympic-built lodges and cultural ranches, all with space to breathe. Given its appeal and offerings, travelers consider Kananaskis the best-kept secret for north-of-the-border luxe adventures, and it's my first pick when visiting the Canadian Rockies.

New infrastructure, including expanded spa access, upgraded trails and a larger, improved indoor waterpark, is fueling the growing interest in Kananaskis' tourism. With its focus on wellness, education and heritage, the region is carving out a distinct identity that goes beyond just scenic views.

Lodges with legacy and luxe

I love waking up in the mountains, especially when a fireplace is already crackling and breakfast is just an elevator ride away. Kananaskis offers lodge stays that feel warm, welcoming and effortlessly upscale, whether you're traveling with toddlers or toasting at the end of a long hike.

Pomeroy Kananaskis Mountain Lodge

Initially built for the 1988 Olympics, the Pomeroy Kananaskis Mountain Lodge blends rustic mountain charm with modern comforts. Guest rooms cater to families and groups, offering lofts, fireplaces and connecting suites. On-site dining options include Forte and the Cedar Room, both serving hearty meals in relaxed alpine settings.

The Blacktail Bar adds a creative twist to the lodge experience. Its G7 Global Cocktail Series showcases rotating drinks inspired by summit nations, such as Canada's Cabane à Sucre, France's La Fille en Rose, which is my personal favorite, and Germany's Berliner Sommer. The Summer Adventure Series features curated experiences, including the Peak Picnic with a keepsake blanket and Après Sessions at Woody's Pub and Patio.

The lodge also offers a series of guest activities for children of all ages every month. Kids can participate in supervised programs such as slime-making and movie nights, keeping them occupied while adults enjoy other amenities.

The Black Diamond Club

Set apart from the main lodge, the Black Diamond Club offers quieter accommodations that include breakfast and a more exclusive experience, perfect for couples or solo travelers. It's just a short walk to the lodge's amenities, including the spa and restaurants, but it feels like a serene retreat of its own. Many rooms feature mountain views and quick access to the village's apres-ski and apres-hike scene.

For adults who wish to unwind, the club occasionally offers hands-on mixology classes, with the last sessions held on July 4 and 5. Experts guide guests through the process, allowing them to step behind the bar and create signature drinks such as the cabane à sucre on their own.

Nature adventures abound

If your idea of luxury includes fresh air and breathtaking views, Kananaskis delivers. From pedal-powered rides to scenic hikes, outdoor enthusiasts will find no shortage of ways to get moving. Hiking options range from gentle lakeside loops to steep alpine climbs, catering to both beginners and seasoned adventurers. There are numerous lakes to explore as well.

Lakes and trails

Paddleboarding, kayaking or canoeing at Barrier Lake is a must, and visitors can rent everything they need on-site at Kananaskis Outfitters. We took out a canoe, and then my daughter spent some time on a paddleboard, exploring the lake. Kananaskis Outfitters has another location in Kananaskis Village for those who want to explore by bicycle.

Wildlife sightings

The chance to observe animals in their natural habitat enhances the region's backcountry appeal. We saw wild sheep licking road salt off the mountain roads, and moose and elk often appear near meadows and forest clearings, making for memorable sightings along the trails.

Bear season peaks in the warmer months, especially during berry season, when sightings near hiking paths increase. Black bears are the most commonly seen species in the region, and while they usually avoid well-traveled areas, carrying bear spray is still essential.

Wellness, wisdom and wide‑open trails

Slow down, saddle up for a horseback trail ride and breathe in the alpine air. Kananaskis invites you to soak in steaming pools beneath a pine canopy and walk alongside stories that have shaped the land for generations.

Kananaskis Nordic Spa

The Kananaskis Nordic Spa features a hydrotherapy circuit of hot pools, cold plunges, saunas and steam rooms tucked into the trees. With five outdoor pools at varying temperatures and multiple steam rooms and saunas, including a Finnish sauna, spa guests can alternate between contrasting sensations. An exfoliation cabin with eucalyptus salts completes the full-body rejuvenation experience.

After finishing the circuit, guests can relax beside fire pits in communal zones that encourage visitors to linger. Massage therapy and body treatments are available for those seeking deeper relaxation, although it is best to book them in advance.

Indigenous‑led medicine walks

Mahikan Trails offers guided experiences through ancient forests, providing a unique way to engage with the land. Guests learn to identify traditional medicinal plants and understand their uses. The stories shared during the walk stem from the history and knowledge of Indigenous Peoples and have been passed down through generations.

These walks adapt seasonally to highlight what's naturally occurring at different times of year. Each experience emphasizes cultural respect, land stewardship and personal reflection, creating a mindful journey that connects visitors to Indigenous knowledge of the land.

Jordan was our guide, and we were astounded by his knowledge and by the bounty around us on the trail.

Ranch life and local legacy

Make time for a horseback trail ride at Boundary Ranch. Trail rides take guests through private forested areas exclusive to the ranch; no bikers or hikers in sight, just horses and mountain air. Boundary Ranch also offers a variety of unique adventures. Their Surf and Saddle package combines scenic horseback riding with white-water rafting on the Kananaskis River. For those seeking a more immersive experience, the Woof & Hoof package pairs dog carting with a horseback ride and BBQ lunch.

Additionally, guests can explore the Guinn Family Wildlife Museum, which showcases over 100 taxidermized animals and historical artifacts, providing insight into the region's rich biodiversity and cultural heritage. Whether you're looking for adventure or relaxation, Boundary Ranch promises unforgettable experiences in the heart of the Canadian Rockies.

Kananaskis Country Golf Course

Nestled in the stunning Kananaskis Valley, the Kananaskis Country Golf Course provides one of the most breathtaking golfing experiences in Canada. Surrounded by the peaks of the Canadian Rockies, it's a haven for both novice golfers and seasoned pros who appreciate challenging courses framed by scenic vistas. The course blends natural beauty with top-tier facilities, ensuring that golfers enjoy a day on the green like no other. Whether you're an avid player or someone looking to relax while surrounded by nature, this is a spot you won't want to miss.

After your round of golf, unwind in the clubhouse at the bar or enjoy a tasty meal. We sat out on the deck with jaw-droppingly gorgeous views. The weather was beautiful, the meal delicious, and those views were simply amazing.

The next chapter in Alpine travel

Kananaskis is claiming the spotlight with a mix of alpine charm and thoughtful experiences that feel worlds away from the usual. With visitor numbers rising, this once-under-the-radar spot now attracts travelers year-round for its luxe lodges, forested spas and family-run ranches. And the best part? It still feels like you've discovered it before the crowds catch on.
