This hit HBO drama is set to return for a third season, with the writer of the first episode now confirmed after a years-long delay
HBO has officially announced that the third season of Big Little Lies is in the works, with a writer on board to script the first episode.
The critically acclaimed drama, based on Liane Moriarty's novel of the same name, explores the lead-up and aftermath of a shocking murder at a school that shakes a close-knit community in Monterey, California.
The series features Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman and Laura Dern as three affluent parents whose lives are disrupted by the arrival of Jane Chapman (played by Shailene Woodley), a single mother to a temperamental young boy who begins to stir up trouble at their children's school.
Jean-Marc Vallée, the filmmaker behind the inaugural seven-episode season aired in 2017, sadly passed away in 2021. The second season, which premiered in 2019, was directed by British filmmaker Andrea Arnold.
Six years on, Deadline has confirmed that the third season of Big Little Lies is finally progressing, reports the Mirror.
Francesca Sloane, co-creator and showrunner of Mr and Mrs Smith, has been enlisted to write the opening episode after signing a two-year overall agreement with HBO.
Her involvement comes as the Prime Video series, which featured Donald Glover and Maya Erskine in its debut season, has been indefinitely postponed.
While the cast for the new season remains unconfirmed, Witherspoon and Kidman are anticipated to reprise their roles, given they're returning as executive producers alongside series creator David E Kelley.
Excitement for the series will certainly be sky-high as the show makes its comeback more than half a decade after its previous run, which famously brought three-time Academy Award winner Meryl Streep into the principal cast.
One enthusiast hailed it as "possibly the most perfect show I have ever seen on TV or in the movies" in their five-star Google assessment.
They went on: "Strong female characters- flaws and all- are exquisitely brought to life by all the actors.
"Meryl Streep in Season 2 was the perfect foil and made an excellent series even better! I want a season three but take your time-we don't want just a potboiler out there! Thank you for such quality work!"
Another watcher was equally bowled over, penning: "Best HBO mini series. It truly is hard to put into words how good this series is.
"The ladies are so talented and the storylines are true to life. WOW the performances by Nicole Kidman, Laura Dern and Alexander Skarsgard blew me away.
"Many aspects and lives entangled in so much drama and the unknown. It is truly a must see! For both seasons."
And a third devotee proclaimed: "This is hands down one of the most complex and enthralling series I've ever watched with a fabulous sound track to back up the powerhouse female lead cast.
"It's relatable, cleverly written and the acting is world class. Both series are equally engaging. This is a must watch!"
With the third series of Big Little Lies yet to grace our screens, there's ample time to immerse yourself in this captivatingly chaotic drama if you haven't done so already.
