HILLSBORO Ore. (KPTV) - The Oregon medical examiner has identified the human remains found in the Tualatin River near Hillsboro in August, the Washington County Sheriff's Office announced on Thursday.
According to officials, DNA confirmed two severed body parts found in the river belonged to 34-year-old Ezequiel Avila-Ruiz, an unhoused man who was known to live near Rood Bridge Park.
On Aug. 8, a kayaker told FOX 12 that he called 911 to report finding what he believed was a severed leg in the water near the Rood Bridge Park boat launch. He also showed the FOX 12 crew a video he took of the scene.
The next day, searchers found a second body part about a mile downriver, according to WCSO. DNA from Avila-Ruiz's family was used to confirm his identity.
Detectives believe Avila-Ruiz was the victim of a homicide, WSCO said. Avila-Ruiz was last seen on July 31 near Southeast Baseline Street and South First Avenue in Hillsboro at about 5:40 p.m.
Anyone who knows where Avila-Ruiz might have gone after that time and date, or has other information about this case, is asked to contact detectives at (503) 846-2500. Reference Avila-Ruiz and case number 50-25-11037.
