Nostalgic Block Party kicks off Duncan Hines Days and Summer - WNKY News 40 Television

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WNKY) -- The city's first-ever Fountain Square Nostalgic Block Party brought music, games, and a dash of childhood nostalgia to Bowling Green's downtown on Sunday afternoon.

The occasion officially kicked off Duncan Hines Days, a free, family-friendly celebration of local culture and community that takes place every year during the summer. Between 1 and 3 p.m., crowds flocked to Fountain Square Park to enjoy food vendors, live entertainment, inflatables, and a life-sized version of a traditional board game that led players through the downtown area.

The purpose of the event, according to city organizers, was to "activate" one of Bowling Green's most famous public areas while simultaneously offering residents innovative ways to socialize and start the summer season together.

"This is our inaugural nostalgic summer block party. Here in Fountain Square. It's our kickoff to the Duncan Hines days, festival festivities," Recreation Division Manager, Cameron Levis said. "Just a a fun way to, you know, celebrate local, activate one of our, mini-spaces here in Bowling Green. You know, the heart of our community here in Fountain Square Park."

The vision for the block party was inspired by a nostalgic painting of the park and a desire to have it come to life.

"The vision for our nostalgic summer block party actually came from, Misha Ambrosia, the local artist, who had a painting of Fountain Square there, if you remember the painting or if you've ever seen it, there's an older couple sitting on the bench, there's concerts in the park going on. And so really what we wanted to do is bring that painting to life," Levis said.

Besides games and food, local programs could be showcased in the park, with attendees having interactive experiences and making fun memories. The event also stood for inclusiveness, as all activities were to be accessible to everybody -- whoever it may be.
