Koyilandi: The famous Kappad beach in Kozhikode has retained its blue flag certification for the sixth year in a row.
The orchid rehabilitation project helmed by the district tourism promotion council at the beach has won the first prize in the best performance and compliances category in the 2025 edition of the Southern Hemisphere Blue Flag certification.
The beach won the award for preventing the disappearance of insects and pollinators. The award has been given by the Denmark based Foundation for Environmental Education.
The Kappad project aims to preserve the local orchid varieties and protect pollinators like bees and butterflies.
This project was envisioned to scientifically preserve the ecology by aligning with the blue flag standards like environmental sustainability, preventing climate change and preserving the coastal eco system.
