Hawaiian Airlines Will Remove Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner Flights To New York-JFK

Judge Rules Delta Air Lines' Lawsuit Against CrowdStrike Can Proceed

Hawaiian Airlines is making a major equipment swap on its services to New York City. The route will soon be served by the Airbus A330-200, replacing the airline's new Boeing 787-9s. Service between New York and Honolulu is among the longest routes in the Hawaiian network, but the airline's new parent company might have new plans for Hawaiian's Dreamliners.

Hawaiian was recently acquired by Alaska Airlines . Though it plans to keep Hawaiian's brand alive, it is reshuffling the carrier's fleet and network. Now that Alaska has access to a widebody fleet, the airline is working to turn its Seattle hub into a global gateway, and Hawaiian's 787s might be perfect for routes beyond North America.

Hawaiian Replaces The 787

According to Cirium, an aviation data analytics firm, Hawaiian Airlines has been flying its Boeing 787-9 between Honolulu International Airport and New York John F. Kennedy International Airport since April 22, 2025. Since then, the Dreamliner has flown the route every day, and this frequency will continue over the summer months. However, Hawaiian will operate its last Dreamliner flight to New York on September 11, 2025.

After this, the Honolulu-based carrier will deploy the Airbus A330-200 on the route. While the two aircraft are similarly sized, according to Hawaiian Airlines, the Boeing 787 seats more passengers in the airline's configuration than the A330. With a lower-capacity jet, the airline could be trying to adjust to the drop in demand that comes after the peak summer season. With this in mind, the airline might restore 787 service next summer, but the A330 will operate the route until at least April 2026.

Hawaiian Has A Small Fleet Of Dreamliners

According to ch-aviation, Hawaiian Airlines has a small fleet of Dreamliners. The aircraft is a newer addition to the Hawaiian fleet, and is helping the airline fill the void left by the retirement of the Boeing 767. Additionally, the 787s will eventually assist the airline in replacing the aging A330-200 aircraft that currently make up an important part of the airline's medium and long-haul network.

Hawaiian only has three Boeing 787-9 jets, but it has another 9 on order. Meanwhile, the airline has 24 A330-200s, making the aircraft a much larger part of the airline's operations. Hawaiian has also embraced next-generation narrowbody aircraft. The carrier has 18 A321neos in its fleet, which allow it to serve select markets not large enough to support widebody flights.

In addition to the A321neo, Hawaiian also operates a robust fleet of Boeing 717 jets. The airline, in addition to Delta, is one of the last commercial airlines to operate the type. Hawaiian currently has 19 of the Boeing jets, and it is unclear how the carrier will update this aging fleet in the coming years.

Posts 1 Alaska Might Have Big Plans For Hawaiian's Dreamliners

Alaska Airlines acquired Hawaiian last year, solidifying the airline's position as the fifth-largest airline in the United States. While the two carriers are very different, their combined strengthens their status as a leader on the US West Coast. Many changes are coming for the two carriers, including an initiative to turn Seattle into a global hub.

Hawaiian Airlines launched a new service to Tokyo Narita Airport earlier this month, with flights to Seoul starting later this year. The airline expressed interest in expanding its global network further, eyeing an entrance into European markets at some point next year. Given the Dreamliner's efficiency and passenger-friendly design, the 787 will likely be an important part of Alaska's long-term growth ambitions.
