He fought and he won. Meet this brave young honorary firefighter who celebrated an end to his cancer treatments.

ATLANTA -- A 4-year-old who embarked on a journey unlike most others is celebrating one of the happiest milestones with a new group of friends by his side: ringing the bell signifying a closing chapter after his years-long cancer battle.

11Alive first told you about Austin Herre in 2023 when he got the incredible experience of being the Cherokee County Fire Department's youngest honorary firefighter. His story touched the hearts of the firefighters, moving them to invite his family to one of their stations.

At just 6 days old, Austin had to fight for his life when he was diagnosed with a rare neurological disorder that affects the adrenal glands and the brain.

After undergoing a life-saving bone marrow transplant from his baby sister for his neurological disorder, Austin's family thought the hardest part was behind them.

Austin was then diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia after his baby sister's life-saving donation at the age of 2. But even after his diagnosis, Austin kept a smile on his face throughout his chemotherapy treatment.

Despite the long nights and tough days, Chelsea Herre said her son never let the pain steal his joy.

"Through all the nausea, hair loss, fatigue and bone pain, he has kept a smile on his face and made the best of every single day," she said.

On Tuesday, Children's Healthcare of Atlanta shared with 11Alive that Austin rang the bell over the weekend, signifying the end of his cancer chemotherapy treatments.

As the bell echoed, Austin stood with a smile, and his family stood proudly -- a little boy with the strength of a warrior, surrounded by the village who stood by him every step of the way.

The event was made extra special with a visit from the Cherokee County Fire Department. Over the years, Austin, his family and the Cherokee County firefighters have developed a special bond. Chief Eddie Robinson, who is also a leukemia survivor, became quick friends after Austin became an honorary firefighter in 2023.

During his 2023 visit, Austin got a tour of the station and helped wash the fire trucks and his toy ladder truck.

According to Children's, the two have been inseparable ever since.

Austin was also named one of Children's 2025 Miracle Children for his strength and resilience.

His family has been sharing their story around the state to raise money and awareness for childhood cancer.
