ST. PAUL, Minn. (GRAY) - Each year, Minnesota State Fairgoers who head to the Education Building have the chance to take part in an annual tradition for the legislature: the State Fair Poll.
Both the House and Senate fair booths host a list of poll questions each year, hoping to gather public opinion on relevant and timely topics.
The two chambers are both currently previewing their poll questions for this year's fair on social media. Visitors can expect a variety of questions this year, like:
"[It's] non-partisan, very unscientific, very informal," Barry LaGrave with the Minnesota House's Public Information Office said. "[We] just try to capture quick responses and the mood of fair goers about a variety of issues that affect them."
According to LaGrave, the process of selecting the questions is a months-long effort.
"Every one of the House committees has one of our writers in it. So as we work through the session, we also ask our writers, 'Hey, if there are issues in your issue area, that may be a good question for the State Fair poll,'" he said.
While the poll serves as a way to gauge public opinion -- again, in a very unscientific way, as LaGrave stressed -- it's also an opportunity for outreach.
Both the House and Senate booths are staffed by members and staff throughout the fair.
"It gives everyone the opportunity to have their voice heard, whether through the poll or directly in conversation with Senate staff and Senators," Wendy Dwyer Bagley with Senate Information said.
Dwyer Bagley said the fair gives visitors a chance to talk with elected leaders in person, but it also allows them to learn about the legislature.
"It's also a great way to learn about the intern program, grab handouts for kids, and ask questions. Beyond the booth, we also use the fair as an opportunity for the public to learn about additional ways they can be involved in the legislative process," she said.
The House and Senate booths are located in the Education Building during regular fair hours.
