Photos show snow on a castle in Scotland - but one brave Highlander still donned a kilt for a winter walk.

The Scottish Highlands and Isle of Skye saw a layer of snow fall turning Eilean Donan Castle into a breathtaking winter scene.

A yellow weather warning for snow and ice was in place across most of Scotland from 6pm on Tuesday night, and is expected to remain active in the islands until Thursday night.

The Highlands and islands are expected to see the most snow, with the Met Office warning of up to four inches of snow on high ground. Despite a mild November so far, temperatures could drop to a low of -10C in the coldest areas of the country.

Eilean Donan sits on a small island at the confluence of three sea lochs - Loch Duich, Loch Long and Loch Alsh. Originally built in the 13th century, it was the stronghold of Clan Mackenzie and their allies, Clan MacRae.

In response to their role in the Jacobite risings, British naval ships destroyed the original castle in 1719 and the modern structure is a 20th-century reconstruction by Lt Col John MacRae-Gilstrap.

Today, it is one of the most photographed monuments in Scotland and has featured in many TV shows and movies, including the 1999 James Bond film The World Is Not Enough and as the home of Clan MacLeod in the original Highlander (1986).

Visitors have regularly described it as like "something out of a fairytale" and it has also featured in adverts for shortbread, whisky and other Scottish products.

On the UK Hidden Gems page on Facebook, a post states: "Eilean Donan Castle is straight out of a fairytale! Sitting on its own little island where three lochs meet, it's one of the most photographed castles in Scotland, and it's easy to see why."
