Boston Red Sox rookie Marcelo Mayer's season is officially over.

Following ominous updates about Mayer's wrist recovery from earlier in the week, manager Alex Cora announced on Sunday that Mayer will undergo season-ending wrist surgery.

Mayer, 22, recently expressed a strong desire to return for his club this season, and he did everything in his power to get his wrist right, including taking a cortisone injection.

Sunday's news, however, shows that the Red Sox are being cautious with the long-term health of their rising star infielder.

Following Cora's announcement, further thoughts from Mayer surfaced, per The Boston Globe's Tim Healey.

"Marcelo Mayer said he plans to stay in Boston for the rest of the season," Healey reported. "By no means do I think my season is over when it comes to learning and getting better," Mayer said, per Healey. "We have a lot of resources here, a lot of veterans who I can still use to help me get better and more knowledgeable."

The Boston Herald's Mac Cerullo also relayed comments from Mayer.

"Marcelo Mayer says this injury is similar to the one he suffered in 2022 but more severe, so he knew early on he'd likely need surgery but he hoped the shot would at least give him a small chance of being able to return this season," Cerullo posted to X. "That didn't work out."

Mayer remains a pivotal piece in Boston's future, hence the Red Sox exercising care with his wrist. With magical talent offensively and defensively, Mayer's ceiling is still unknown, and the only glaring worry about his value is his injury history.

Hopefully, Mayer will have a fully successful rehab and return much stronger for Opening Day 2026. When Mayer is healthy, Boston's collection of young, major-league talent is impossible not to get excited about.
