PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE)- Gov. Dan McKee and RIPTA CEO Christopher Durand have completed a new budget framework that they say will prevent route eliminations and driver layoffs throughout the state.
In a joint statement, the two said that the budget plan would help close RIPTA's operating deficit, stabilize its long-term financial footing and "chart a responsible path forward."
The agreement does still mean that many lines will see reduced frequency.
This new framework comes after the original budget plan saw intense public backlash and a campaign against the cuts, which happened due to an $18 million funding gap.
The Save RIPTA campaign's organizer said in a statement that they were glad that routes would no longer be cut, but said that more work needed to be done.
"While the pressure of our advocacy is moving the conversation in the right direction, this new proposal will still cause harm to tens of thousands of Rhode Islanders with cuts to services in trips, frequencies and on weekends," Save RIPTA Campaign organizer Liza Burkin said in a statement. "People will lose their mobility, jobs, independence, and quality of life. It is not something to celebrate."
RIPTA's Board of Directors will vote on the new plan on Thursday.
