Food inflation in the UK has risen for the fourth straight month, according to data released by the British Retail Consortium (BRC) on Tuesday. In May, food prices climbed 2.8% compared to the same month last year, slightly up from the 2.6% increase recorded in April. This figure also exceeds the three-month average of 2.6%, signaling persistent pressure on household grocery bills.

Helen Dickinson, Chief Executive of the BRC, attributed the continued rise primarily to fresh food prices. In particular, she pointed to higher wholesale beef costs as a key driver behind the uptick. The increase in meat prices is placing additional strain on both consumers and retailers already grappling with broader inflationary challenges.

While the overall inflation rate in the UK has shown signs of easing, the steady rise in food prices suggests that families are still facing elevated costs at supermarkets. Analysts warn that if this trend continues, it may hinder broader economic recovery efforts by limiting disposable income and consumer spending.
