How does Justin Walley's injury affect the cornerback battle?

How does Justin Walley's injury affect the cornerback battle?

The big news coming out of the Colts' 24-16 loss in their preseason opener to the Ravens was Anthony Richardson Sr. picking up an injury -- again.

But head coach Shane Steichen also gave a vital injury update after the game on rookie standout cornerback Justin Walley, who tore his ACL in practice on Tuesday and will be out for the season.

It's an absolutely brutal break for Walley, who was in good position to earn the other starting outside cornerback job with Charvarius Ward. Now, the Colts have to reevaluate the position group entirely.

What makes navigating this preseason at cornerback even more difficult is that Walley isn't the only corner with an injury.

"We have three guys down who were competing for a starting job," Shane Steichen said following Thursday night's game. "We have to stay healthy at that position."

JuJu Brents and Jaylon Jones, the other two currently dealing with hamstring injuries, aren't guaranteed to be back in the near future. Hamstrings are notoriously difficult to rehab and return from, so rushing both back isn't the wisest decision.

Still, Indy had a couple players who flashed during their preseason opener. On the very first play from scrimmage, Alex Johnson came down with an interception. Chris Lammons and Sam Womack III have experience playing for the Colts previously. Training camp signing Duke Shelley was second on the team in tackles with six.

So there are options. Not the options the Colts ideally would want, but they're options nonetheless.

There's still plenty of time to evaluate, too. Indy still has two more preseason matchups to see what they have at cornerback other than Ward and Kenny Moore II. Maybe Brents and Jones are able to make it back on the field sooner rather than later as well.

Regardless, the cornerback depth chart won't exactly shake out the way that Indy had envisioned entering this summer, but if they can make the right decisions on who to keep, then the secondary could end up being just fine.
