Sherrone Moore: Michigan's starting QB will be named on game week

ANN ARBOR -- In less than two weeks, Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore will name the Wolverines' starting quarterback.

Moore fielded plenty of questions Tuesday about the quarterback competition and mostly freshman Bryce Underwood, but he did not offer much in terms of who has separated themselves and has the lead.

However, Moore did say he will publicly name the starter Aug. 25, the Monday ahead of the Wolverines' Aug. 30 season opener against New Mexico at Michigan Stadium.

"Set your clocks," Moore said, smiling.

Moore said he will inform the team who the starter is before he makes it publicly known.

"The quarterbacks have been great, much improved, playing at a really good level," Moore said. "We'll see where it goes. I know you guys want to know who the quarterback is. I'll tell you on game week."

Underwood, the nation's top recruit in the 2025 class, is thought to be the front-runner. Mikey Keene, a transfer from Fresno State, was supposed to be Underwood's chief competition but missed the spring with a shoulder injury and is participating as much as he can this fall, Moore said. Jadyn Davis and transfer Jake Garcia also are competing for the job.

Moore said the quarterback who is most consistent will be the starter.

"Whoever the starting quarterback is, (the key is) to raise the level of the team, and for them -- (Underwood), Jadyn Davis, Jake Garcia and Mikey Keene -- to make sure that they put themselves in position so that they're the best quarterback version that they can be for Michigan football and be leaders of the offense," Moore said. "Obviously, we always talk about the offense being led by the offensive line but the quarterback has to be the captain of that room, that offense. Whoever that is, that's who I want them to be."

At Big Ten media days last month, Moore said the starting quarterback will have "grabbed" the team, as in consistently showing himself to be unflappable and able to make the right decisions in whatever the circumstances may be. Moore said that all of the freshmen have been in contact with the team's sports psychologist to help them reduce nerves and handle the emotional highs and lows of camp.

What will prove to be an enormous test for the quarterbacks, as well as all the players challenging for starting jobs, is these next four days. The players had meetings but did not practice on Tuesday to get ready for the upcoming stretch.

"Where we'll get after it really well," Moore said.

This is where Moore thinks the players who are taking hold of positions will continue to ascend. After a scrimmage on Saturday, he said the staff will have a better feeling for the depth of the team and how the personnel shakes out.

"There's guys that are making climbs, there's guys that are cementing themselves to put them in position to be in position, and there's guys that are still taking the steps that they need to get there," Moore said. "But we're in a really good place."

These more heated -- and not just because of the weather -- upcoming practices will also give the coaches a better idea of what the quarterbacks can handle. Again, Moore said he will be looking for consistency, who has command of the offense, who makes plays and who protects the ball.

"You're in practice 12, 13, 14, 15. You can easily take a step back, so are you going to, when it's 91, 95 degrees outside, blame or not have as good a day as you had before, or are you going to keep the level of play," Moore said. "Just want to see that level of consistency."

Keene is the most experienced of the quarterbacks, having made nearly three dozen starts during his career at UCF and Fresno State, but he has been limited in fall camp.

"He's done a good bit," Moore said of Keene. "He's participating at the rate that he can, and we'll see as far as how much he can do and what he'll do as we go through. But he's been doing a good job for us and managing everything he needs to do."
