Maine fire officials have released preliminary findings on the cause of Tuesday's apartment house fire in Veazie.

The name of the injured person has not been released. The State Fire Marshal's Office reports that one person sustained second-degree burns on their feet.

Officials say a dog and possibly a cat perished in the fire that brought in mutual aid response from multiple towns, from Howland to Orrington, and even the Air National Guard.

Additionally, about a dozen firefighters were treated at the scene for heat-related illnesses as they battled the fire on one of the hottest days of the year.

Fire crews from several departments responded to the fire at the Colonial Village apartments on Thompson Road that was reported at around 3 pm. Officials say the fire started in the exterior porch area of one apartment, likely from the improper disposal of smoking materials.

Through quick work by firefighters, the blaze was contained to only four apartments, although neighboring units suffered smoke and water damage.

The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced residents.
