Franklin County administrator stepping away from position

Franklin County Administrator Chris Whitlow will be stepping down after seven years of service in the position. He made the announcement at the board of supervisors' monthly meeting Tuesday.

Whitlow was officially hired to the position in 2020 after serving as deputy county administrator since 2004. He took the position on an interim basis in 2018 following the departure of his predecessor, Brent Robertson.

At Tuesday's meeting, Whitlow did not provide any details on his decision to step away from public service. He also did not announce any plans for what he would be doing after he left the position, but he said he felt a calling to pursue something else.

"It is something, I believe, the Lord is leading me to do," Whitlow said of starting a new career. "Whether that is the private sector, maybe some missionary work, maybe nonprofit. I don't know what the next adventure will be."

Boone District representative and Chairman Ronnie Thompson praised the work Whitlow has done in his time as county administrator, stating he was leaving "at the top of his game." He mentioned the county's taxes were low, bond rates were high and the amount of services provided by the county had never been greater.

Whitlow announced he would be staying in the position until Feb. 1, leaving the county time to find a replacement. Thompson said the hiring process has not started yet, but they are considering whether they will hire a replacement from within or look outside the county.

"We've just got to figure out what the next steps are," Thompson said.
