JAMESTOWN -- The Cass County Catfish got a dominant pitching performance and that helped them get a 4-0 win over the Jamestown Hounds in the first round of the 2025 NDHSAA AAA amateur baseball state tournament on Friday, Aug. 22, at Jack Brown Stadium.
The Catfish's Brendan Maasjo pitched a complete game shutout while giving up three hits and striking out three hitters and walking two hitters. The Hounds used two pitchers, Mason Lunzman and Jake Stilwell who combined to pitch six innings giving up four earned runs on 11 hits while striking out five and walking three hitters.
"All of them started working tonight, fastball mostly heavy and then mix it up, a little curveball, slider, changeup mix, every once in a while. But nothing crazy," Maasjo said.
The Hounds had a chance to break through first in the second when they had a runner on third with one out but a strikeout and a lineout ended the frame.
The Catfish opened the scoring in the bottom of the third when Carter Maasjo hit a single to left to score a run and make it 1-0. The hosts added one more in the frame to take a 2-0 lead. The Catfish added another one in the bottom of the fourth to go up by three runs. The Catfish tacked on one more in the fifth on a single up the middle from Jack Everson to make it 4-0.
"We were seeing the ball really tonight, people sitting back, waiting on curveballs, watching the spin out of the hand and hitting the ball really well," Maasjo said.
The Hounds were held to three hits with the knocks coming from Connor Hoyt, Brady Anderson and Danny Fischer.
The Catfish are back in action at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 23, when they take on the Jamestown Elks. The Hounds return to the field at 5 p.m. on Aug. 23, when they face off against the Elks.
