Brewers' bats explode for nine runs in first two innings against Cubs

It's safe to say a week-long layoff didn't slow down the Milwaukee Brewers ahead of the NLDS.

The Brewers wasted little time in erasing an early 1-0 deficit to the Chicago Cubs, putting up a nine-spot in the first two innings.

Tasked with solving Cubs southpaw Matthew Boyd, Milwaukee opened the game with three straight doubles, taking the lead and setting the stage for the big inning. The Brewers continued to roll, taking advantage of a Nico Hoerner error in a five-hit frame to chase Boyd before he could record three outs.

Boyd, a 2025 all-star, got the ball for the Cubs on short rest despite his spotty record against this Brewers offence. In two starts against Milwaukee this season, the 34-year-old gave up nine runs, 12 hits and eight walks in 10.1 innings while only striking out five.

In Game 1 of the Wild Card Series against the San Diego Padres, Boyd worked 4.1 frames of one-run ball, helping the Cubs to a series-opening win.

But things flipped on Saturday, as the Brewers continued to own the matchup.

Jackson Chourio spearheaded Milwaukee's outburst, becoming the first player to record three hits in the first two innings of a post-season game, according to MLB.com's Sarah Langs. Unfortunately for the Brewers, Chourio was forced to exit with a hamstring injury after reaching in the second inning.

Caleb Durbin provided the big swing for the Brewers in the second inning, blooping a first-pitch sinker into centre field with the bases loaded to score two runs.

All the early runs forced the Cubs to change pitchers twice, as Michael Soroka replaced Boyd in the first and Aaron Civale entered with two outs in the second.
