Sonam Wangchuk's wife approaches Supreme Court over his arrest in Ladakh protest

Sonam Wangchuk's wife, Gitanjali Angmo, has moved the Supreme Court challenging her husband's arrest under the National Security Act (NSA).

In a habeas corpus petition, Angmo has sought his immediate release, terming the arrest "illegal" and a "violation of norms under NSA."

Angmo has questioned the imposition of the NSA on Wangchuk and said that she has yet to receive a copy of the detention order, calling it a clear breach of procedure.

"I am yet to get a copy of his detention order. This is a violation of rules. I have had no contact with my husband since his detention," she said.

Wangchuk, who has been lodged in Jodhpur jail since his arrest following violent clashes in Ladakh on September 24, was formally detained under the NSA on September 26. The clashes, which erupted during protests for statehood and inclusion of Ladakh in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, left four people dead and several injured.

On Wednesday, Angmo also wrote a three-page letter to President Droupadi Murmu, seeking her intervention. She alleged a "witch-hunt" against her husband for his work in the region and expressed deep concern over his wellbeing. "We request for an unconditional release of Wangchuk, a person who can never be a threat to anyone, leave alone his Nation," she said.
