'There's a chance': Buckley drops coaching bombshell as rumours swirl

Nathan Buckley has given his strongest indication yet that he may throw his hat into the ring to be the inaugural coach of the Tasmanian AFL team.

The Devils are set to join the competition in 2028, becoming the AFL's 19th team.

As yet, no head coach has been locked in, although the club has made key appointments, with Brendon Gale named CEO and Derek Hine and Todd Patterson to oversee recruitment and list management.

Buckley hasn't coached since stepping down from the Collingwood job in 2021, although he's been consistently linked with vacant positions around the competition.

Speaking on SEN on Monday, Buckley confirmed that he'd met with Gale to get a better understanding of the role.

"There's a chance," Buckley said when asked about the possibility of coaching the fledgling side.

"Obviously this has come back around with Brendon's comments. We met a couple of times last year.

"The initial one was from him and then the second one was from me to understand the challenge that the Devils face and how they are going to build that club, to put my two cents in, I suppose, and then to learn as much as I possibly could about it.

"There's a couple of really good football people that I believe would go really well down there. I put their names forward and put them in front of Brendon."

Buckley was then asked if he was ready to coach again.

"I'm still asking myself that question," he responded.

"That coaching bug is still there, [but] I'm really enjoying what I'm doing at the moment.

"An existing club versus the Devils - they're two very different propositions.

"So to understand more about the Devils is to understand whether you think it fits and whether you're energised by it.

"That challenge is something so different to what I've experienced. It's fundamental, it's what footy is all about, it's helping young men find their way through the early stages of their career.

"Picking senior players to come in and off-field staff that have experience and are passionate and want to grow something from the ground up.

"It's a very different challenge and one that I'm still exploring."

Buckley wasn't able to taste ultimate glory as a player or coach, coming close in 2002 as Collingwood captain, and again in 2018 while in the hot seat at the Pies.

The 52-year-old questioned whether it would be a realistic goal if he was to take the job in Apple Isle.

"If you go back into coaching, you want to win a flag," he said.

"That may or may not happen with the Devils in their first four or five years.

"The pragmatic version would be, 'No, that won't happen, you're setting it up to leave a legacy for generations down the track.'"
