President Lee Jae Myung has met with the head of OpenAI that developed popular chatbot ChatGPT and discussed ways to expand cooperation in artificial intelligence(AI).
The meeting was held at Lee's presidential office in Seoul on Wednesday afternoon following Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix signing letters of intent(LOIs) with OpenAI on memory chip supply for its flagship "Stargate" AI infrastructure project.
During the meeting with Sam Altman, Lee welcomed OpenAI's agreements with the world's two largest memory chip makers as "mutually beneficial partnerships," expressing hope that the collaboration will help expand South Korean companies' exports and create more jobs.
Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong, joined by SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won at the meeting, said that the partnership will help South Korea stand at the center of the global AI paradigm and pioneer a new future.
Earlier on Wednesday, the Ministry of Science and ICT signed a memorandum of understanding with OpenAI for cooperation in the AI sector.
