The Detroit Tigers are a top team in the American League and have been playing well as of late. But, to make a deep postseason run and potentially win the World Series, some more things need to go the Tigers' way.
One of those things is the pitching staff, which, fortunately, is performing very well after their trade deadline pickups have been solid. But, on offense, there's one player who needs to turn things around.
Nick Halden of Detroit Jock City identified Tigers outfielder Riley Greene as the most important Tiger down the stretch this season. Halden says Green "will determine how far Detroit will go this season."
While one player can't dictate how well a team plays in a team sport like baseball, they do have a huge role in the team's success. For Detroit, the most important player right now is Riley Greene.
Part of why Greene has become more than just a core piece of the team is due to his recent struggles. After being an All-Star in the first half of the year, his second half hasn't been nearly as good.
"Dividing the numbers into the first and second half makes the concerning drop all the clearer," Halden writes, "with 24 homers and a .284 average compared to five homers and a .202 average in the second half. That's without mentioning how he paces the Majors with 163 strikeouts."
Not only does Greene have a significantly lower batting average, but he's also continued to rack up his strikeouts and play at a significantly lower clip than he did to begin the year.

While he's still a solid hitter, his numbers since the All-Star break have been massively underwhelming. Detroit can still make the postseason, and even make a deep run if Greene isn't playing at his best.
But, to win a World Series, which is the goal, the Tigers need Greene to turn things around in the final month and a half before the postseason in October.
The 24-year-old is a huge component of the Tigers' offense, and even with his struggles lately, he's still been a key piece of the team.
Since August 10th, Greene has a .211 batting average but an .880 OPS thanks to three home runs and three doubles in eight hits across 38 at-bats. But he needs to increase his average down the stretch for the Tigers to have their best chance of success this postseason.
While the Tigers have a strong lead in the AL Central and look poised to earn a top-two seed in the AL playoff field, the struggles of Greene could hold the team back.
