A stampede almost broke out at the Humansdorp Magistrate's Court as parents, school staff and community members tried to push their way inside the courtroom ahead of the appearance of six youngsters accused of killing school pupil Liyolo Wakeni.
However, the case was held in-camera.
Liyolo, 18, was stabbed to death at Humansdorp Senior Secondary School on September 23.
According to the police at the time, a brawl broke out between pupils on the school premises at about 8.15am and Liyolo, a grade 12 pupil, was declared dead at the scene.
From 9am until after midday on Thursday, representatives from the different media houses were sent from pillar to post by court staff as a decision was made whether to allow reporters to cover the proceedings.
After a long wait, the courtroom was cleared to protect the identity of some of the accused who are still minors.
The magistrate indicated that a decision would be made with regard to media coverage at a later stage.
Braving the rain outside the court were scores of concerned parents, community members and school staff.
The case against two of the accused, Gregon Stevens and Lathitha Buzani, both 18, was postponed to October 9 for judgment in their respective bail applications.
The remaining four accused, all aged 17, are due back in court on Friday.
Liyolo's father, Siyabonga Plaatjie, said the family would respect the court's decision.
He said his son's funeral would be held at his home village in Peddie on Saturday.
School governing body chair Ben Ruiters said the school would send a delegation to attend Liyolo's funeral.
