If you're a horror fan, there's a big chance that you have already seen the latest big studio film to hit theaters. Weapons, the feature by Barbarian director Zach Cregger, is an original horror piece in a sea of sequels and remakes. It's an unsettling tale of witchcraft blended with small-town dynamics that doesn't hold back any of its punches when delivering the scares. Cregger, who has already proved his might with his debut feature, returns with a bold approach that doesn't answer all the questions.
Part of Weapons is still shrouded in mystery (that assault rifle -- OMG!), and one of the questions viewers probably still have is the appearance of Se7en director David Fincher in the credits. Cregger decided to show his appreciation for the director, and, according to his latest claims, it wasn't just a matter of influence. Fincher was reportedly involved in some of the decisions made behind the camera.
Cregger spoke to Variety in a conversation where some questions were answered, but he also does admit that there are some things he doesn't understand. When asked about David Fincher's name popping up in the credits, Cregger said the following:
"He's just a very helpful guy. He was available to me during prep, and then he was very available during the post process. He watched the movie and had a lot of really constructive thoughts and gave me a ton of ideas. He helped me learn more about the editing process and how to think about it in a new way that wasn't available to me when I was making Barbarian. So he just opened my mind up a lot.
"There are things I thought I had to just settle for. I thought, 'Well, that's the take I have. That's the best take. And it's not perfect, but by God, nothing is.' Dave's attitude is, 'It can always be better, and there are a lot of tools that you have at your disposal that you might not be thinking about.' So, from reframing to stabilization to ADR to all sorts of things, it was really cool. Honestly, I learned a lot about how to prep, what lenses to use. I shot this mostly anamorphic, and I didn't quite respect how limiting anamorphic is in the post process. So stuff like that, technical stuff."
'Weapons' Is One of 2025's Most Successful Horror Movies
Amid the hype, we're failing to see that it's too soon to start talking about sequels and prequels. There have been discussions about a prequel based on Gladys' character, but nothing has been confirmed yet. Warner Bros. is likely waiting to see if the movie keeps doing well.
However, Variety has already asked Cregger if he had thought about continuing the story or if he had other ideas that took place in the same universe. Given the premise's interesting lore, his answer should not surprise you:
"Definitely. I've actually ... it's funny you asked that. I can't help it: I have another idea for something in this world that I'm kind of excited about. I'm not going to do it next, and I probably won't do it after my next movie, but I do have one, and I'd like to see it on the screen one day."
