Police have said the victim tried to stop one of the suspects who jumped behind the counter before she was swarmed and kicked repeatedly by others in the group.
The victim's hijab was ripped off during the attack, but investigators have said there's no evidence that hate was an aggravating factor.
Police had previously charged two girls, aged 13 and 14, with assault in the case and have said that an 11-year-old boy was also identified as a suspect but he cannot be charged due to his age.
Advocates in the Muslim community have said the alleged attack has left people anxious and frightened amid a rise in Islamophobic incidents.
The victim's daughter has also said her mother was "deeply shaken" and the family is concerned about her safety.
This report by The Canadian Press was first published Sept. 23, 2025.
