The one-take wonder of 'Adolescence,' a family drama about knife crime

LONDON (AP) -- Each episode of new four-part Netflix drama "Adolescence" was filmed in a single continuous shot. The British show launching Thursday follows a young boy accused of stabbing a classmate. Newcomer Owen Cooper plays the teenager. While filming, the camera was handed between operators like a relay race and carried by the fast-moving crew as they followed the actors in and out of buildings. Star Stephen Graham reckons it's a zen-like style of acting and that you get the same spontaneity and energy that you get from a live performance.

Nikki Glaser to return as host of Golden Globes in 2026

NEW YORK (AP) -- After a well-reviewed emcee debut, the Golden Globes are bringing back Nikki Glaser to host the 2026 ceremony. Globes producer Dick Clark Productions announced Thursday that Glaser will return for the 83rd Globes next January. Glaser, the first woman to host the show solo, successfully shepherded a ceremony she called "Ozempic's biggest night." The Globes drew 9.3 million viewers, according to Nielsen, a 2% dip from the year prior. The top awards went to the films "The Brutalist" and "Emilia Pérez" and the TV series "Shōgun" and "Hacks."

Ashley Graham to make her Broadway debut as Roxie Hart in the razzle-dazzle musical 'Chicago'

NEW YORK (AP) -- Model and entrepreneur Ashley Graham will make her Broadway debut this spring in the musical "Chicago," adding her celebrity to a show that skewers celebrity culture. Graham, who made Time's "100 Most Influential People in the Word" in 2017 and Glamour's "Woman of the Year" in 2016, will play Roxie Hart from April 15-May 25 at the Ambassador Theatre. Set in the 1920s, "Chicago" is a scathing satire of how show business and the media make celebrities out of criminals. It has Bob Fosse-inspired choreography, skimpy outfits and killer songs such as "All That Jazz" and "Cell Block Tango."

Movie Review: Soderbergh's sleek spy thriller 'Black Bag' crackles

There's a crackling patter to "Black Bag" -- Steven Soderbergh's marital drama cloaked as a sleek spy thriller. Lean and taut, the 93-minute "Black Bag" is more a sizzling amuse-bouche than full-course meal, but it's simmered to perfection, writes Associated Press Film Writer Jake Coyle in his review. With Michael Fassbender and Cate Blanchett playing married British intelligence agents, "Black Bag" has the air of menace and suspicion of a John Le Carré novel, yet hinges on the sturdiness of its married couple, like a super spy version of Nick and Nora from "The Thin Man" or a more cerebral "Mr. & Mrs. Smith."

NFL players score a shot at Hollywood through hands-on training sessions with filmmaker Deon Taylor

SANTA MONICA, Calif. (AP) -- Filmmaker Deon Taylor has built a pipeline for pro athletes to transition into a filmmaking post career with the Hidden Empire Sports Collective. He recently launched the entertainment division focused on elevating athletes' voices through content creation and intellectual property development with training sessions with more than 20 former and active NFL players at his studio office in Santa Monica, California. It's the third year of program -- which has featured panelists including entertainers Tyrese Gibson and Master P along with NFL player Vernon Davis. This year, athletes eager to break into film had the opportunity to learn from Taylor and Ephraim Salaam, who successfully transitioned from the NFL to Hollywood.

Movie Review: Russo brothers' sci-fi 'The Electric State' is big, ambitious and dull

The Russo brothers bring Simon Stålenhag's illustrated novel "The Electric State" to life in the new big budget Netflix film. Millie Bobby Brown stars as a teen looking for her genius brother in this post-robot-war dystopia, set in 1994. Chris Pratt also stars as the veteran turned smuggler with whom she teams up. AP Film Writer Lindsey Bahr writes in her review that if an algorithm designed a classic, big-screen spectacle for the small-screen age, "The Electric State" probably wouldn't be too far off the mark. Unfortunately, Bahr adds, it doesn't work. Rated PG-13, "The Electric State" is on Netflix on Friday.

Donatella Versace out as creative director of the Milan fashion house, in a shakeup by US owner

ROME (AP) -- Donatella Versace has been replaced as creative director of the fashion house founded by her late brother Gianni Versace. She will assume the new role of chief brand ambassador, Versace's U.S. owner Capri Holdings announced on Thursday. Versace will be replaced by Dario Vitale, who most recently was design director at the Miu Miu brand owned by the Prada Group. The shift comes amid speculation that the Prada Group is in talks to buy Versace from Capri Holdings, which paid 2 billion euros for the fashion house in 2018. Versace, 69, welcomed Vitale, emphasizing in a statement that "championing the next generation of designers has always been important to me."

Gucci names Demna new aristic director, as he moves from Kering sister brand Balenciaga

ROME (AP) -- Gucci has announced that the Balenciaga artistic director Demna, who goes by one name, will take over the creative direction of the Italian luxury fashion house starting in July. Gucci and its parent Kering said in a statement on Thursday that Demna "has redefined modern luxury, earning global recognition and cementing his authority on the industry.'' Demna has been at Kering-owned Balenciaga for a decade. He brings with him the title of artistic director. Demna said he is "truly excited to join the Gucci family.'' The announcement ends speculation about Gucci's creative future after Sabato De Sarno's sudden exit just 2 1/2 weeks before the presentation of the Fall-Winter 2025-26 collection during Milan Fashion Week last month.

For busy actor Brian Tyree Henry, a change between projects seems to be as good as a rest

Since breaking out as rapper Paper Boi in the FX series "Atlanta," Brian Tyree Henry's become one of the busiest actors in Hollywood. He's worked with leading directors, including Barry Jenkins, and Steve McQueen, and big-name actors like Brad Pitt and Chris Hemsworth. Henry's been nominated for two Primetime Emmy Awards, a Tony and an Oscar. His latest project, premiering Friday, is the limited series "Dope Thief" for Apple TV+. Henry and Wagner Moura play friends who pose as federal agents to seize -- or steal -- drugs and cash. Their lives are upended when they rob the wrong people.

Fluttering arms, aching calves, bursting lungs: 'Swan Lake' is a ballerina's Mount Everest

NEW YORK (AP) -- Much of the world knows the story of "Swan Lake," the most iconic of all ballets. Few know exactly how punishing the lead role of the swan queen can be. This season at New York City Ballet, three new swan queens arrived at the lake. The three ballerinas making debuts in the famed dual role of Odette/Odile say it was a childhood dream fulfilled -- and also one of the most difficult physical feats they've ever achieved. It's a role that demands stellar technique, uncommon physical stamina, emotional resilience, killer calves -- and even carbo-loading.
