CA to leave for NY Sunday to attend UNGA

Chief Adviser Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus will leave Dhaka on Sunday night for New York to attend the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

He is expected to arrive in New York on September 22 and deliver his address to the Assembly on September 26, Senior Assistant Press Secretary Foyez Ahammad said on Saturday. The Chief Adviser will return home on October 2.

At a briefing on September 17, Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain said four political leaders would be part of the Bangladesh delegation this year: BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, BNP leader Humayun Kabir, Jamaat-e-Islami Nayeb-e-Ameer Syeed Abdullah Muhammad Taher, and National Citizen Party (NCP) leader Akhter Hossen.

He noted that in his speech, Professor Yunus will review the interim government's activities over the past year and reiterate its commitment to restoring democracy through reforms and free, fair elections scheduled for February next year.

This year's UNGA will also hold special importance for Bangladesh, as on September 30 the UN will host its first-ever High-Level Conference on the Situation of Rohingya Muslims and Other Minorities in Myanmar.
