"I Just Remember Having Blood on Me": Jessica Biel Knows Why She Failed Her 'The Notebook' Audition Opposite Ryan Gosling

"I Just Remember Having Blood on Me": Jessica Biel Knows Why She Failed Her 'The Notebook' Audition Opposite Ryan Gosling

Jessica Biel -- a performer in films like The Illusionist and Blade: Trinity, and the TV series The Sinner and Candy -- had yet to land her breakout role until she starred in the 2003 remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Back then, Biel was still convinced she hadn't found the role that would change her life. However, during the production of the horror film, she had the opportunity to audition for a film that she was sure would launch her into stardom. The problem is that her audition for the lead role in The Notebook didn't go well. The 7th Heaven actor is sure that it was because of the heavy effects makeup she could not remove before auditioning opposite Hollywood heartthrob Ryan Gosling.

Biel appeared on an episode of The View (which we saw via Entertainment Weekly) to talk about her new TV series The Better Sister. The Prime Video series will bring Biel back to the thriller genre, and she showed some of the set photos featuring her in bloody makeup. Biel remembered how often her characters are seen drenched in blood (as fans saw in Candy, things got messy), and that's when she was asked about the unsuccessful audition for The Notebook:

"I was shooting 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre,' I was super young, and I auditioned for 'The Notebook,' which was going to be the greatest option for me in my career, like, 'What an amazing thing to get after that.' Ryan and the director came to my trailer, they came to us on location, and we auditioned in my trailer at work, and I didn't get it of course, we know this is the answer. But in my mind I just remember having blood on me and being in that white tank top, and took my cowboy hat off, and was like, 'Okay, I'd love to fall in love with you, let's do this.' It was very strange, a very Hollywood moment, you know?"

As Biel points out, playing Allie in The Notebook was a no-go. Nevertheless, after her role in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the actor still saw her career gain momentum, and it didn't take long for her to land starring roles in films like Stealth and London. Her performance in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, as criticized as the remake was, left a lasting impression on the industry and cemented her status as a modern scream queen.

'The Notebook' Remains a Timeless Classic, Thanks to Its Perfect Cast

The Entertainment Weekly report indicates that, at one point, Britney Spears, Scarlett Johansson, and Claire Danes were all considered for the role of Allie, but ultimately, Rachel McAdams would prove to be the right option to stand opposite Ryan Gosling in the timeless classic that is The Notebook.

Today, it is hard to imagine someone other than Gosling playing Noah and McAdams playing Allie (and not just because the duo once dated in real life). They were essential for the movie to work beyond its romantic movie tropes. The couple actually convinced audiences they were made for each other, and their on-screen chemistry made us believe that their love could transcend time.
