Sometimes the most powerful movements start with the smallest spark that turns into a very bright light. This month, I sat down with the team at the TMH MANCAVE to talk about their therapeutic answer to suicide. As a life coach, I've seen firsthand the devastating impact suicidal ideations can have on a person based on any number of variables. I know how critical it is to create spaces where men can speak their truth before silence turns into tragedy. There are many more of these resources available for women than men, which makes the work of the TMH MANCAVE even more valuable.
For Licensed Clinical Social Worker & Psychotherapist Tytannie Harris, it began with one workshop -- a simple idea to recognize the mental wellness needs and lack of resources for Black men. That workshop grew into a heartbeat for the community, now known as the TMH MANCAVE, a nonprofit space in Chicago where Black men and boys gather to release, reset, and restore.
Today, The TMH MANCAVE hosts signature events like its, Monthly Online Wellness Group, Summer Teen Talk Boxing & Mental Health series and a special Father's Day Experience. At the center of it all is Executive Director Fred Long, who helps guide the vision, execution, and energy that makes the TMH MANCAVE more than just a program -- it's a village.
That village shows up for families like David Watkins and his son, Jaydon. "Boys cannot be what they cannot see," Watkins says, reflecting on the consistency of the TMH MANCAVE. For Jaydon, seeing men come together to speak their truth has been life-changing. "It's not just boxing," he shares. "It's knowing somebody hears you."
But here's the truth: the TMH MANCAVE has been self-funded since the beginning. Every workshop, every conversation circle, every moment of healing has been made possible by grassroots support. Now, as the need grows, the TMH MANCAVE is calling on the community -- individuals, businesses, churches, foundations -- to step in.
Support can look like donations big or small, or even the gift of event space so more men and boys can be reached. Because when men are given a safe place to speak their mind and be understood, whole families and communities are strengthened.
