Black Bag has become a hit at its new streaming home. The 2025 movie was directed by prolific filmmaker Steven Soderbergh (Magic Mike, Ocean's Eleven) and written by his frequent collaborator David Koepp (Kimi, Presence). It follows NCSC counterintelligence officer George Woodhouse (Michael Fassbender) facing a dilemma when his wife Kathryn (Cate Blanchett) is suspected of being a mole.
Glowing Black Bag reviews earned the movie, which also stars Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris, Ambika Mod, Marisa Abela, Tom Burke, Gustaf Skarsgård, and Pierce Brosnan, a near-perfect Certified Fresh score of 96% on Rotten Tomatoes. After debuting on Peacock on May 2, the well-regarded spy thriller has moved to the Amazon streamer Prime Video.
Now, Black Bag has landed on the daily chart of the most-watched movies on Prime Video in the United States. After debuting on the streaming platform on September 5, it first appeared at No. 4 on September 7 before rising to No. 2 and maintaining that position for four consecutive days. At the time of writing, it is now No. 3.
The only movies currently ahead of it on the chart are also 2025 theatrical releases: the Jason Statham action movie A Working Man and the true story survival thriller Last Breath.
What This Means For Black Bag
The fact that 2025's Black Bag is connecting with audiences on streaming could help make up for the fact that it underperformed theatrically. While its exact break-even point is unknown, movies often need to earn two and a half times their budgets in theaters, and the spy thriller reportedly cost between $50 and $60 million.
This price tag means that it may have needed to earn something between $125 and $150 million by the end of its theatrical run in order to break even. However, it only grossed $43.6 million worldwide, thanks to a more or less even haul from domestic theaters ($21.5 million) and international markets ($22.1 million).
While its break-even point may have been considerably lower, especially if there wasn't a huge advertising spend, the fact that Black Bag grossed less than the lower range of its estimated budget still placed it on shaky financial ground by the end of its time in theaters. However, streaming revenue could push it more firmly over the edge into profitability.
Our Take On Black Bag's Streaming Success
The fact that Black Bag is now a sturdier success is a good sign for the Steven Soderbergh movie. While it did not become a runaway success in theaters, if it continues building an at-home audience, it could eventually become a proper cult hit and have longer-lasting success than its theatrical run might have implied.
