High school students unveil new downtown Appleton music-themed mural

APPLETON (WLUK) -- A new music-themed mural in downtown Appleton made its debut on Friday night, part of an annual two-week summer program where students partner with an artist to create more art in the city.

The mural prominently features a guitar, piano, trumpet and drums.

"The drums everybody might think of the drums like the drumsticks, but I wanted to feature hand drums," said lead artist Neo Medina. "It's just a different cultural element."

Medina teamed up with 20 Appleton Area School District students, the fourth year of the program.

The mural is located on the Fox Commons building on a fairly visible spot on the backside of College Avenue. It's a perfect representation of the growing arts and music scenes here in Appleton.

Medina created the design, and the students painted and added detail.

"I'll show them in an image and I'm just like here you do this. It doesn't have to be spot on but like somewhere in there," said Medina. "They get some of the deciding factors. Or even sometimes color or placement will be different and I'm like, 'You make the decision.'"

The students began work last Monday, August 4 and at times began work early in the morning.

"We came here at 6:30 (a.m.) just to come and finish this side too," said Erin Vue, a senior at the alternative Appleton Central High School.

It's a chance for students to grow over the summer.

"Having the opportunity to just come here and make this all together," said Vue, "it really shows you something so small like this can build people together."

Added Dee Payne, a senior at Appleton North: "I learned that there's beauty in imperfection, honestly, that's really what I learned. Because there was lots of stuff that we wanted to be perfect, but it didn't turn out perfect but it still turned out amazing."

The next generation of artists eager to enhance their city.

A few other murals have recently been unveiled in Appleton including a couple postcard murals on College Avenue.
