Lakers jersey history No. 5 -- Duane Cooper

Lakers jersey history No. 5 -- Duane Cooper

Through the 2024-25 season, the Los Angeles Lakers have had a total of 506 players suit up for them, going back to their days in Minneapolis. Some were forgettable, some were serviceable, some were good and a select few were flat-out legendary.

As the Lakers approach their 80th season of existence (they were founded back in 1946 as the Detroit Gems in the National Basketball League), LeBron Wire is taking a look at each player who has worn their jersey, whether it has been a purple and gold one or the ones they donned back in the Midwest during their early years.

In 1992, the Los Angeles badly needed help at the guard position following Magic Johnson's retirement. They took shooting guard Anthony Peeler with the No. 15 overall pick in that year's draft, and in the second round, they took Duane Cooper, a 6-foot-1 point guard out of the University of Southern California.

Cooper never panned out in the NBA. He averaged 2.4 points on 39.2% field-goal shooting and 2.3 assists in 9.9 minutes a game as a rookie with the Lakers. He signed as a free agent with the Phoenix Suns in November 1993 and played one season with them.

He then went on to play in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA), where he won a league title with the Yakima Sun Kings in 2000.
