MAULDIN, S.C. (FOX Carolina) - Nearly four years after an incident shut down I-385 and left two people dead, police said they have filed charges in the case.
Investigators have been tight-lipped about the crash and shooting since May 23, 2021. The coroner said 29-year-old Rashon Javarous Irby and 31-year-old Andrekus Davarous Irby were involved in an altercation with people in another car.
Gunshots were fired and three vehicles crashed near Old Stage Coach Road during the incident. The Irby brothers died on scene and several other people were hurt.
The crime scene spanned more than a half-mile of the interstate, which was littered with shell casings, bullet fragments, weapons and other evidence.
U.S. Marshals helped police apprehend nine suspects tied to the incident on Friday.
Multiple officers and detectives in Mauldin previously worked on the investigation, but with few leads and uncooperative witnesses, the case stalled. Detective Jenna Willson reopened the investigation in 2024 and worked with the solicitor's office to make charges.
"We're holding everyone accountable for their role in an incident that never should have happened," said Lt. Kevin Cox, Investigations supervisor. "This incident stemmed from a fight that began in Laurens and continued into Mauldin, where gunshots rang out going down the highway, two people tragically lost their lives and several others were injured."
The following suspects have been charged:
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), Laurens County Sheriff's Office, Laurens Police Department and South Carolina Department of Probation, Parole and Pardon Services assisted in the investigation.
Seven of the suspects are currently being held in the Greenville County Detention Center.
"These charges underscore the Mauldin Police Department's commitment to protecting the community and holding criminals accountable, no matter how long it takes," Police Chief George Miller said. "I'm proud of the hard work done by our investigators to bring a resolution to this complicated case and seek justice for the victims and their families, and I'm grateful to our partner law enforcement agencies for their assistance with arresting all nine suspects without incident."
Willson, the lead detective on the case, has helped crack cold cases before. In 2024, Willson helped Mauldin Police make an arrest in the 2020 homicide of Alex Liddy.
