Dutch public broadcaster AVROTROS announced on September 12, 2024, that it will not participate in the 2025 Eurovision Song Contest if Israel is allowed to compete. The decision stems from concerns over the ongoing conflict in Gaza and allegations of political interference by the Israeli government.
AVROTROS stated its decision followed extensive consultations with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and other public broadcasters over recent months. The broadcaster emphasized that the Eurovision Song Contest was founded in 1956 with the aim of uniting people after war and division, promoting peace, equality, and respect.AVROTROS's official statement details these concerns.
Though, AVROTROS believes Israel's participation is no longer justifiable given the "ongoing and severe human suffering in Gaza." The broadcaster also cited concerns regarding press freedom, alleging "proven evidence of interference by the Israeli government" in the contest, and the potential for the event to be used as a "political instrument."
