April 27, 1944 July 24, 2025
George Russell Campbell passed away on July 24, 2025, from complications of COPD and pneumonia. George was a colorful Sheridan personality from local homesteader stock. He was born on April 27, 1944, to Luella Fern Harnish and Robert Russell Campbell in Sheridan Wyoming. His family lived in Echeta, Newcastle and Gillette during his young years and later in Casper, as his dad worked for the CB&Q Railroad. George had career in the food industry from a young age, starting out under his mother, Lu, who worked at Walgreens restaurant in Casper. At 17, he enlisted in the Navy for 4 years. Afterward, he got on with Walgreens as a manager and went on to open restaurants for them throughout the Midwest.
George is remembered for his quick wit and love of people. He married the love of his life, Peggy Wicker, in 1976 and was married for 30 years before she passed away from cancer in 2016. He used to be a party personality when he met Peggy. However, meeting her provided a stabilizer for his life. They retired to Sheridan from Omaha, NE in 2008. After Peggy died, George found Jesus and changed his life once again. He was a dedicated member of the Cowboy Church of the Big Horns since 2018. He always looked forward to being reunited with Peggy. In his last days, Sheridan hospital personnel remarked that there were more people visiting his room than commonly happens. He will be fondly remembered for his love of God, guns and country. He was preceded in death by his father, mother, niece Mary Norene Ogogor, and son Sean. George is survived by his son Doug, grandchildren Alexander and Shawn Hope. He is also survived by his brother David Campbell, and wife Helen, of Sheridan and extended family.
A Celebration of Life is planned for November 28, 2025, at a location to be determined. He will be missed by all.
