That's the advice I was given by a couple of people in Mirfield when the subject of cake, coffee and lunch came up. But they neglected to tell me it's not actually called Tommy's, nor did they warn there's no name sign above the door.
Tommy's, properly known as Qream T's Cakery, was founded by Tommy Turner six years ago and he's now got two cafes, one in Huddersfield Road, Mirfield, West Yorkshire, and a second at Toll Gavel, Beverley, East Yorkshire.
After a bit of head-scratching I found the cafe at 146 Huddersfield Road in the heart of Mirfield. It was almost lunchtime and nearly all the tables were taken, so it's clearly pretty popular. The menu, headed "Cakes, Treats and Lunches", says that everything is made in the Qream T's cakery and that "our treats are what we're known for. There is always at least 12 treats to choose from."
More about those decadent treats later.
I ordered a "stack" sandwich (£9.95) which was two slices of sourdough bread topped with Prosciutto ham, avocado, feta, rocket and sundried tomato. There was a delicious kick of jalapeno in the avocado and the dressing on the side salad was delicious. Attention to detail 5/5 on the stack sarnie.
After a fabulously frothy Cuppucino (£3.50), I asked about the cakes and cookies. The lemon drizzle cake (£3.50) was a firm favourite with customers and that was me convinced to have a slice "to go". It was a hefty slice and was moist and zesty.
There were lots of other treats available, from scones and cookies to millionaire shortbread, flapjack and brownies.
I loved the cafe's quirky decor, with floating flowers, teapots, floral wallpaper. The vibe was relaxed, with the customers quietly chatting away, with classical music in the background.
Customers seem to go out of their way to leave glowing review's about the cafe. One reviewer on TripAdvisor wrote: "Stumbled across this wonderful cafe today for lunch. Beautiful decor, gentle background music which gave the place a wonderful vibe. Very friendly server, delicious soup and toastie and a great cup of hot coffee! What's not to like! Won't be my last visit ...wish I'd found it sooner."
Another visitor wrote: "This quaint little place was recommended by a local businessman. It did not disappoint. The place is so cute and great classical background music. Lovely welcoming atmosphere."
The cafe has almost 80 reviews on Google, with an average of 4.9 out of 5.
Reviewer Laura wrote: "A quintessentially British tea room; beautiful with a warm, welcoming atmosphere. The staff are absolutely lovely and make you feel right at home. Perfect spot for tea and a slice of something sweet!"
One customer posted: "It's pretty much impossible to be disappointed by anything on offer here.
"The savoury offerings are made to a high standard, in terms of flavour and presentation. The cakes are divine, but the selection of brownies on offer will. Change. Your. Life."
The reviewer added: "If you really want an extra special time, ring and book the 'afternoon tea' high tea experience, you will NOT be disappointed."
