Chairman of the government's Artificial Intelligence Task Force, Christopher Reckord, says there's need for a legislative framework that clearly outlines rules for the use of artificial intelligence, AI, in political campaigns.
It is among the recommendations the AI Task Force submitted to cabinet.
Speaking on Nationwide at Five on Thursday, Reckord says this will help to prevent the use of deepfake technology on the political campaign trail.
A deepfake is a realistic-looking image, video, or audio recording that is created using AI to make it appear authentic. Deepfakes can be used to create original content or replace a person in an existing video or image with someone else.
The use of deepfakes is one of the latest ways that fraudsters are perpetuating fraud.
Reckord says the government also needs to run a national AI public awareness and sensitisation awareness campaign. This was another recommendation made by the task force.

Meanwhile, CEO of 876 Solutions, Trevor Forrest, who is also a member of the AI Task Force, agrees that there's an urgent need for AI legislation.
He says another policy recommendation made by the Task Force is for the public to be advised when they are engaging with AI technology.
