Fallbrook High School's boys tennis team reached the second round of the 2025 CIF Division III playoffs.
The Warriors defeated Clairemont in the first round of the playoffs before losing to top-seeded Valley Center in the quarterfinal. The playoff results gave Fallbrook a final overall record of 11-6 in dual matches.
In 2013, the CIF San Diego Section transitioned from playoff divisions based on enrollment to divisions based on competitive balance. The divisions were set prior to the start of the season. The coronavirus shutdown eliminated the 2020 boys tennis playoffs, and the delay in the start of the 2020-21 seasons caused boys and girls tennis to be combined (girls tennis is normally a fall sport) with formal mixed doubles competition for the first time in CIF San Diego Section history.
The lack of any mixed program history caused the CIF to base the 2020-21 playoff divisions on the cumulative universal tennis rating (UTR) data for each of a team's players. The teams with the eight highest UTR totals played in the Open Division playoffs; the next 16 teams were in Division I; the teams with the 24th to 40th UTR totals competed in the Division II post-season, and schools whose UTR ranked 41st through 56th along with any league champions who received automatic playoff berths were Division III participants.
Although girls tennis and boys tennis returned to separate seasons for 2021-22, the playoff divisions based on cumulative UTR were retained.
As the team with the 48th-highest cumulative UTR in 2025, the Fallbrook boys were given the eighth seed in the Division III playoffs and an April 29 home match against ninth-seeded Clairemont. Fallbrook obtained a 10-8 victory, capturing eight of the nine singles sets and two of the nine doubles sets.
"We were just stronger at the top than they were," said Fallbrook coach Bill Lenaway. "They had better depth."
The lack of depth would cost Fallbrook when the Warriors traveled to Valley Center for the April 30 quarterfinal. The Jaguars, who eventually would win the Division III championship, advanced to the semifinals with a 13-5 triumph at the Warriors' expense.
"They're a deeper team than we are," Lenaway said.
The Warriors and Jaguars had played each other March 12 in Fallbrook. Valley Center won that non-league match by a 12-6 score, and all six of Fallbrook's points were from singles sets.
In the playoff, Fallbrook won four of the nine singles sets, with senior Connor Skaja and junior Micah Kendall each winning twice, and one of the nine doubles sets. The Warriors' doubles point was won by sophomore Casey Manion and senior Kaiden Kluis.
"We just need our bottom guys to play in the off-season and improve," Lenaway said.
