Labor Day is a federal holiday in the United States, which is celebrated on the first Monday of September to honor and recognize the American labor movement. Labor Day in 2025 is on Monday, Sept. 1.
While most government offices, banks and public schools will be closed to recognize the important day, there are places that will be open.
Here are a just a few places that will be either closed or open in the Wilmington area on Labor Day.
Closed
The New Hanover County government offices will be closed on Labor Day. This includes public libraries, courthouses, the Senior Resource Center, Health & Human Services clinics, the Household Hazardous Waste facility and the Hazwagon.
All United States post offices will be closed for retail transactions and there will be no regular residential or business mail deliveries.
All services of FedEx will be closed, which includes FedEx Express, FedEx Ground, and FedEx Home Delivery.
UPS domestic ground, air and international pickup and delivery services will not be available. UPS Store locations may be open. Check with your local store for specific hours of operation. UPS Express Critical service will be operating.
As far as Labor Day, city offices (including the recycling and trash office) are closed said Amy Passaretti Willis, communications manager. However, recycling and trash services will still run. To schedule bulky, metal, or electronics collection for Monday, Sept. 1 or Tuesday, Sept. 2, call to schedule service no later than Friday, Aug. 29 by 4:30 p.m. Monday customers should place carts at the curb Sunday evening or before 6 a.m. Monday. Recycling collection is for BLUE week customers.
All county offices and towns will be closed on Labor Day. Also all branches of the public libraries will be closed. The landfill will be closed.

The Pender County Government offices will be closed. All public libraries, the Holly Shelter Shooting Range and the Pender County Transfer Station will be closed. Pender County convenience sites will remain open and operate on their regular schedule.
Sam's Club located at 412 S. College Road in the University Center, Wilmington will be open.
The Battleship North Carolina is open from 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
The Children's Museum of Wilmington, located at 116 Orange St., downtown Wilmington, will be open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Labor Day.
Legion Stadium Pool, located at 2131 Carolina Beach Road, will be open from noon-5 p.m.
Robert Strange Pool, located at 401 S. 10th St., will be open from 1-5 p.m.
Earl Jackson Pool is open year-round and is located at 750 Bess St. Pool hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
Echo Farms Park: The swimming pool, which is managed by New Hanover County, will be open from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. on Labor Day. The park is located at 4112 Echo Farms Blvd. in Wilmington. Details: 910-798-7730.
Walmart, major grocery stores, malls and convenience gas stations will be open for Labor Day. Their hours of operation may vary.
