At the movies: 'Jaws' back on the big screen for 50th anniversary

FAIRFIELD -- School's back in session and the week's first movie, "Almost Popular," opening in limited release on Wednesday, tells the story of two girls on a mission to become part of the elite girls who run their high school.

Friday's nationwide releases brings a sequel and anniversary release and other plots.

"The Roses" centers on the chandelier-shattering legacy of Barbara and Oliver Rose that is passed down to their children. Josh marries Victoria, only to see the marriage fall apart over an incident involving missing Milky Way bars. Evie is a promiscuous over-eater carrying her own shrapnel. The result is deceit, violence and destruction. Andy Samberg, Benedict Cumberbatch, Olivia Colman and Kate McKinnon are featured. The film is rated R.

Zoe Kravitz, Austin Butler, Liev Schreiber and Vincent D'Onofrio star in "Caught Stealing," the story of a high-school baseball phenom who can't play anymore, but everything else is going OK. Then, his punk-rock neighbor asks him to take care of his cat for a few days. He finds himself caught in the middle of a motley crew of threatening gangsters. The film is rated R.

"The Toxic Avenger" features Elijah Wood and Kevin Bacon in the tale of a high-school teen who gets dunked in a vat of toxic waste by a corrupt chemical company. He survives with one major side effect: upon contact with toxic chemicals, he transforms into a monster with superhuman strength. The film is rated R.

Cue the music: "Jaws" marks its golden anniversary by returning to theaters. The story centers on the seaside community of Amity, which is under attack by a dangerous great white shark. The town's chief of police (Roy Scheider), a young marine biologist (Richard Dreyfuss) and a grizzled shark hunter (Robert Shaw) embark on a desperate quest to destroy the beast before it strikes again. The film is rated PG.

Opening in limited release are:

"Run," about a woman who leaves her fiancé at the altar. Her best friends convince her to go to a cabin in the woods on a much needed "Girls Trip" to get her mind off things. Then, a friend is found mutilated in the middle of the woods. The film is rated PG-13.

"The Short Game," which centers on a teen golf sensation who is suddenly hit with crippling loss right before a must-win state championship. The film is rated PG.

"Griffin in Summer," about a 14-year-old boy who spends his summer putting on his dramatic new play: an ambitious cross between "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf" and "American Beauty." His tween collaborators get distracted by more trivial pursuits. The film is not rated.

"A Little Prayer," the story of a man who tries to protect his daughter-in-law when he discovers his son is having an affair. It touches on a variety of issues in a changing modern South. The film is rated R.

"Love, Brooklyn," the story of three longtime Brooklynites who navigate careers, love, loss and friendship against the rapidly changing landscape of their beloved city. The film is not rated.

"Stranger Eyes," which centers on a young couple who, after the unexplained disappearance of their baby daughter, receives strange videos and realizes someone has been filming their daily life, even in their most intimate moments.
