4 killed in fiery crash after car jumps center divider on 15 Freeway in Temecula

TEMECULA, Calif. (CNS) -- Four people were killed and two others suffered major injuries in a two-vehicle crash on the Escondido (15) Freeway in Temecula, authorities said Sunday.

The crash was reported around 9:30 p.m. Saturday on the southbound freeway north of Winchester Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The agency said a BMW was being driven recklessly in the freeway's northbound lanes and veered to the left, traveling over the concrete median wall into the southbound lanes of I-15 until it came directly into the path of a white Nissan Sentra.

The front of the Nissan crashed into the right side of the BMW, which caught fire and became fully engulfed, the CHP said.

The BMW's 25-year-old driver was pulled from the driver's seat by good Samaritans, but he sustained major injuries and was subsequently rushed to Inland Valley Medical Center.

The right front passenger of the BMW, a 23-year-old woman, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Two juveniles traveling in the back seats of the BMW were also pronounced dead at the scene and were described as a 14-year-old boy and 15-year-old girl. All four occupants of the BMW were from Moreno Valley, according to the CHP.

The 35-year-old driver of the Nissan suffered fatal injuries and he was pronounced dead while being transported to a hospital, according to the CHP.

The Nissan's right front passenger, a 22-year-old man, was rushed to Inland Valley Medical Center where he was listed in critical condition. The occupants of the Nissan were from Wildomar, according to the CHP.

The CHP said investigators did not believe that alcohol was a factor in the crash. The reason for the BMW's alleged reckless driving was still undetermined.

Anyone with additional information regarding the crash was encouraged to contact the CHP's Temecula Area office at 951-466-4300.
