ALDOT preparing major bridge repairs that could delay your commute

RIVERSIDE, Ala. (WBRC) - The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) has scheduled repair work to the Riverside Bridge next week, starting Sept. 29. That means one lane on Interstate-20 West Bound (WB) that runs over the Coosa River will be shut down for up to a week, leaving some truck drivers concerned.

"It's going to be 55, 60 miles per hour. We come through here about four or five times a week. Basically, we got about 70 hours to roll during the week and that's how we make money," said truck driver Joshua Norris.

ALDOT officials say traffic volume over the 62-year-old bridge has increased since it opened in 1963. Truck driver Adam Williams says he drives I-20 WB daily and says he understands the need for the repairs but worries about other drivers.

"Other cars, other vehicles do not respect truck drivers. They'll rather play Russian Roulette with a truck driver knowing they can't win so that's going to be a major problem, major problem," said Adam Williams.

Veteran truck drivers say they're used to delays because it's part of their business. With safety as a top priority, some even say they have no choice but to accept it.

"You just got to be patient. Patience is the number one key to this business. If you didn't have patience when it comes to this business, you're going to learn it," said Torayne Williams.

ALDOT officials say as many as 10,000 trucks cross the Riverside Bridge every day. ALDOT crews are currently working on alternate routes before next week.
